Innoviris is a Brussels based institute for research and innovation, an organization of current relevance to the Brussels-Capital Region with a mission to promote and support scientific research and technological innovation. Innoviris grants project subsidies to companies, non-profit making organisations, universities and high schools in Brussels. From a range of projects including scientific research, experimental development or innovation projects, projects that promote and popularize or raise awareness of the sciences, each funded project is chosen because it seeks to have a positive impact within their genre on the Brussels-Capital Region.

In order to find solutions to the current and future challenges of our society, there is a great need for expertise in science and technology. Women account for nearly half of the world’s population but they remain, despite encouraging signs, under represented in these areas.

A gender analysis carried out by Innoviris as part of the government’s ‘Gendermainstreaming’ plan, shows a huge imbalance in the Brussels-Capital Region in the amount of girls compared to boys that choose scientific vocations, resulting in an imbalance of the amount of women compared to men involved in all scientific orientations.

The figures showed that only 25% of science and technology graduates are female. Based on the results of this analysis, recommendations were formulated and now serve to develop an action plan and, by the year 2019, its operationalization.

In 2017 Innoviris launched a new campaign highlighting female scientists. WATS stands for: Women Award in Technology and Science and is a campaign that seeks to strengthen the position of women in scientific research and innovation in the Brussels-Capital Region, especially in fields where few women are present. The main objective of the campaign is to generate interest in science and technology among young girls in Brussels. The institute hopes to break some norms and to strengthen the position of women in the field of scientific research and innovation.

The WATS campaign takes the form of an on-line competition allowing public participation. Innoviris puts the spotlight on different profiles of women in science via an on-line link at so that these candidates become examples for young girls and become an ambassador for all female scientists in Brussels. The campaign concluding on February 25th with an afternoon of discovery for the young scientist at which the ‘ambassadors’ will also participate.

Brings together actors known in the field in Brussels. Each brings their own expertise to the table, for example awareness-raising, mentoring, training or networking. The platform is directed at all women in Brussels whether they are already leading projects, or looking for information or specific type of support, or looking to attend events to raise awareness or get insight into entrepreneurship by women…and, more widely, to all women who just want to find out more about how other women have set up their own businesses.

Our mission is to:

  • Stimulate business creation and job creation by women.
  • Promote a full range of diversity in entrepreneurship by women in Brussels as well as increasing the visibility of women entrepreneurs.
  • Monitor the evolution of entrepreneurship by women in Brussels, both in quantitative and qualitative terms, and – thanks to the practical expertise of our partners – use this information to make recommendations to the relevant authorities.

Through the work of the Women in Business platform, the Brussels Region seeks to stimulate entrepreneurship by women. The 1819 service is the driving force behind this platform.
